How does the sign-up process work? Advanced audition signups are available online (click here to sign up now!), or by finding us on Bruin Walk during Zero and 1st Week or the Activities Fair (Mon. September 22 from 10-2 p.m. in the IM Field)! Auditions are scheduled in 5-minute increments from 7-11 p.m. every night, and though advanced signups are highly encouraged, we always welcome walk-ins.
What kind of song should I choose for auditions? Bottom line is, we want to hear a preview of your vocal ability. While we suggest avoiding genres such as rap, country, and broadway.. just make sure your clip remains vocally-based, one-minute or less, and LOUD and CONFIDENT! Remember that we're looking for people who can sing under pressure-filled environments like these auditions, so smile, remain calm, and show us what you've got!
Can you tell me a little more about Callbacks? Callbacks are the second and final round of auditions, offered to those who really "wow" us during the first round. You will be notified by email with the Callback results after midnight on the last night of auditions, and if selected, you will be given 1 or 2 songs that you'll need to become somewhat familiar with by the time Callbacks roll around. This is nothing to stress about since we often choose mainstream songs that you already know, but either way, you'll need to practice it until you know it well enough to solo (we recommend putting it on your ipod & listening to it while walking to class!) In addition to the solo portion, we'll be breaking into vocal parts (sopranos, mezzos, altos) and learning the individual background parts to 1 or 2 songs so all you Callback-ers can see what it's like to be in Signature, and all us Signature singers can see what you'd be like in our group! This exercise will also allow us to see how well you learn music, blend with others, work as a group, and handle our a cappella rehearsals!
What does the audition form consist of? This is a form you will fill out immediately prior to your audition, and will consist of simple questions like past vocal experience, year in school, preferred vocal part, etc. The main use of this paperwork is to learn a little more about you--about your past and about your personality! It is extremely important that you provide correct information (namely your phone number and address) in case we need to contact you.. and we guarantee all information to remain confidential.
What do I need to bring to my audition? Yourself, maybe a bottle of water, and that's it! We'll be able to provide a starting note if you need it, and we'll have everything else you need to fill out the audition forms and complete the audition process. Just dress to impress and show us what you've got!!!
What if I have a scheduling conflict during auditions or callbacks? In the event of a scheduling conflict, you will need to email us at signaturea@ucla.edu as soon as you find out. Often, we'll be more than happy to accommodate your scheduling needs.
How many new members do you take? While there's no easy formula to tell you how many members we'll take or what your chances of getting in are, we can say that we usually aim to take somewhere between 5 and 10 new members, though the exact numbers fluctuate annually depending on how many people have graduated, etc. Overall, we'll accept as many members as it takes to replenish each vocal part, often believing that we'd rather have too many people than not enough!
What kind of committment is joining Signature? Membership in Signature requires a good amount of commitment & dedication on a weekly basis. We have around 5 hours of rehearsal every week, performances throughout the year, and other events such as retreats, recording sessions, and competitions you'll be required to attend. This time IS, however, guaranteed to provide you with some of the best memories and friendships of your life (that's right, LIFE)... so you'll probably end up choosing to attend all of the optional dorm brunches, parties, dinners, and other social get-togethers. All in all, joining Signature is an amazing experience, and you'll definitely receive much more than you put in!
Still have more questions? Feel free to email us at signaturea@ucla.edu!
